What Is Toughened Safety Glass? Everything You Need to Know

Apr 11, 2025 | Fixaglaze Explains...

What Is Toughened Glass?

Toughened safety glass is up to five times stronger than ordinary glass. It’s the ideal solution when strength, safety, and durability are required. Unlike standard glass, when toughened glass breaks, it shatters into small, blunt pieces, greatly reducing the risk of injury.

At Fixaglaze, we typically install toughened safety glass in doors, next to doors, or in any windows that are less than 800mm from the floor, where extra protection is needed.

How Can I Tell If I Have Toughened Safety Glass?

Smashing the glass to test it isn’t exactly the best idea! Instead, the simplest and most cost-effective method is to look for the kitemark code BS EN 12150 printed or etched on the glass.

Benefits of Toughened Safety Glass

  • Shatters into smaller, less dangerous pieces if broken
  • Exceptionally durable and difficult to break
  • Up to 5x stronger than ordinary glass
  • Excellent thermal resistance — withstands extreme temperatures
